The Junior Ganymede Club Book, that well-guarded and much sought after book of secrets on the English aristocracy was composed entirely of understated and restrained entries by gentlemen’s gentlemen from all over England. It rarely permitted photographs as the core values of decency and modesty were paramount. One of the final few entries in that legendary book, now housed in a prominent museum carries this photograph. The entry composed by Mr. Reginald Jeeves under the heading ‘The remains of the day’ claimed that it was this photograph that inspired one of the most famous scenes of understated romance and acceptance in a successful Hollywood ‘thriller’ film. I appreciate with fondness, Mr. Jeeves’s perspective. I must also point out that the essence of the exact nature of the relationship between the people in this photograph (which includes my father) extends beyond simple words.
