The Daily Trail did come up with an ace. Its intrepid correspondent, Fernsby, temporarily outwitted by Jones, was in the midst of a philosophical walk. Jones of The Daily Socialite had gone off for a celebratory drink and a platter of fish. He froze. He did the grin of a boy who is seeing his favourite film stars on screen about to kiss for the first time. He wondered what it would mean, if for once, he did not see the world through a lens. Just to let a moment be what it was. He wondered if some people did live a fairytale. He suddenly heard a loud ‘Gor Blimey’. It was Jones, running in. He quickly pulled out his camera and took this picture. Then, he triumphantly walked past Jones.
Momentum is a real thing. Fernsby knew he could not stop now. He had the psychological advantage over Jones. Put the ball into the left corner of the net after pretending to go right. He would hide behind a fruit basket. He would dress like an old woman. He would teach Jones a lesson in camouflage. He would set the standard for journalism.
He would…whatever else he would do was momentarily lost when a young scamp smacked him with a ripe plum and it splattered on his face. There the boy stood, up the steps, in suspenders, laughing at him. The cheek of it! Fernsby was going to teach him a lesson in English politeness. The boy ran off laughing. Fernsby went off after him.
Jeeves, standing nearby reading a newspaper was pleased. That had been rather easy. Unfortunately for Jeeves, he heard a ‘Now, that is perfect.’ and saw that a second reporter had snapped a picture. It was Jones. Lady luck had changed sides again. Jeeves raised an eyebrow and reminded himself, ‘There is never just one reporter on a job.’
