Every now and then, I look through an old album. This one was one of Aunt Bobbie’s favourite pictures. I think I know why it was so special to her. It was a time like no other, a time to be carefree, to be optimistic. This photo was never commissioned. She simply found it in an envelope pushed under her hotel door. Whoever had taken it never sold it to a newspaper. Perhaps they saw the joy of simply being in the moment writ large on the faces of my father, Aunt Bobbie and Uncle Bertie and decided that the moment belonged to the people in the picture alone. One day, I asked her if I could have it. She told me to keep it safe.
